Norconsult and Nye Veier have implemented an AI-driven analysis tool that could revolutionize decision-making in large infrastructure projects. Developed by Infraspace, the tool automates complex calculations of key metrics in road projects, drastically reducing analysis time.

By using AI to find optimal road alignments that balance environmental concerns and economic efficiency, the National Road 4 project between Gjøvik and the Mjøs Bridge aims to set a new standard for sustainable early-phase project development.

A Strategic Focus on Infrastructure Projects

Nye Veier's corporate strategy emphasizes digitalization and technology adoption. Although artificial intelligence (AI) isn't mentioned explicitly, leveraging new technologies is embedded in their core values, "innovate" and "improve."

"By using AI-based technologies like the one provided by Infraspace, combined with reliable data, we can better support the planning, development, and execution of projects and make faster decisions," says Harald Monsen, Project Planning Manager at Nye Veier.

Early-phase project development involves making timely, well-informed decisions. Large infrastructure projects have no standardized approach to early-stage solution development and optimization. Additionally, defining appropriate goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) is crucial, as they must account for multiple stakeholders and needs.

These KPIs include both quantifiable factors such as investment costs, traffic benefits, and accident-related costs, as well as non-quantifiable factors like land use, biodiversity, and environmental impact. Understanding and balancing these indicators has historically been time-consuming and qualitative.

"Infraspace has developed a solution that automates complex calculations for road projects, reducing analysis time from days to minutes," adds Marius Fiskevold, Environmental Impact Expert at Norconsult .

Improved Decision-Making in Less Time

Norconsult and Nye Veier have found that Infraspace's tool provides a solid foundation for evaluating and comparing concepts early in the project phase.

The result is more informed decisions that benefit local communities, nature, climate, and economic factors. The tool enables more detailed impact analyses for route options, which were previously limited to rough estimates. It also provides up-to-date data for decision-making, minimizing the reliance on summaries or post-decision reports.

"We can now assess a broader range of concepts quickly and objectively, according to the same criteria. Additionally, it's easier to account for sustainability considerations in the planning phase, as we can rapidly evaluate the environmental impact of various alternatives," says Siv Sundgot, Senior Project Manager at Norconsult.

Efficient Virtual Design and Construction (VDC)

The AI-driven tool has streamlined Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) processes. With better data, project teams can make informed decisions while reducing the need for extensive preparation. Interactive Collaboration and Engineering (ICE) sessions can now focus on evaluating and comparing concepts.

"Compared to similar projects, this tool has significantly cut the time needed to prepare decision-making materials, particularly for non-quantifiable topics," Sundgot notes.

The tool also reduces the number of people required for early project stages, while allowing strategic involvement of key personnel at the right times. Additionally, it helps identify gaps in data that need to be addressed.

Exploring Multiple Alternatives

"The Infraspace algorithm analyzes terrain and slopes in relation to categorized project areas. It uses predefined road profiles with cut and fill calculations to provide a realistic view of terrain impact and material usage," explains Terje Faanes, Project Director at Norconsult.

This technology accelerates the calculation process and generates metrics for day-to-day project management. It supports data-driven decision-making and sustainability goals.

"By integrating AI into project development, we can now consider more alternatives and scenarios, linking them to decisions and risk assessments. This boosts precision and resource optimization," Faanes adds.

Verified Against Traditional Methods

To ensure reliability, Norconsult and Nye Veier are verifying the AI tool's results through parallel traditional methods. This approach has built confidence in the technology, with continuous documentation of its impact.  "Collaboration with Nye Veier has been crucial in challenging regulations to maximize gains in climate and biodiversity without compromising standards," Faanes remarks.

Innovation and Collaboration

Nye Veier and Norconsult are taking a proactive stance on AI regulations, including the forthcoming EU AI Act.

"For Nye Veier, this involves learning from implementation as a responsible developer, ensuring ethical considerations, fairness, accountability, and transparency," says Jostein Rygg, AI Advisor at Nye Veier.

Infraspace provides transparency and reliability, simplifying processes and helping define the appropriate level of detail in early-stage solution development. This could standardize a new type of early-phase infrastructure project delivery, setting a benchmark for data-driven planning.

"Digital transformation is not just about implementing new technology but changing mindsets, rethinking established processes, and fostering continuous innovation," explains Gjermund Dahl, Head of Digital Transformation at Norconsult.

A Competitive Edge

Andreas Bjune Kjølseth, CEO and founder of Infraspace, emphasizes the strategic advantage of adopting AI in infrastructure projects:
"It's not only about reducing construction costs but also optimizing the planning process, freeing up time and resources for complex projects."
